MIGRATION TO FORMS 11g

This is the latest version of Oracle Forms and Reports and runs on the Oracle 11g Weblogic Server. Oracle Application Server 10g is superceded by this new environment which is part of the new Fusion middleware approach.

Why might we convert to Forms/Reports 11g?

• This is the latest version, and while it is still quite new, the 10g environment has it's support period rapidly running out and there is a strong argument to bite the bullet for 11g.
• Forms under OAS 10g is based around java v1.3 or 1.4 , which is old quite 'old' from a support point of view with significantly newer versions of java may be needed for other projects. Some sites may be 'forced' for compatibility reasons on the desktop to go for version 11g.
• Oracle has some good success stories of sites using Forms and Reports 11g on their web site which are very encouraging.

What other issues are there with Forms 11g

• While it is very close, code-wise to Forms 10g, the Weblogic Server environment that it now lives within is very different. This requires the DBA's and the developers to learn a new and quite complex environment to work within.
• The Weblogic environment does seem quite memory hungry. You will need to upgrade developer PCs and maybe your main production hardware as well.
